Ever been to China? America’s labor movement is responsible for every gain in the workplace that most take for granted today. Here’s a familiar phrase: “The weekend, brought to you by the labor movement.” That’s absolutely true.

Without unions, Americans would not have a 40-hour work week, minimum wage laws, vacation and holidays, protections on the job, pensions, health benefits, child labor laws – you name it, the labor movement fought with blood, sweat and tears to secure those rights. And I want to make this clear – the labor movement’s victories are victories for all workers – union and nonunion.

These anti-worker billionaires and organizations want to turn back the clock and eliminate the only advocate the American worker has left – labor unions.

We cannot count on corporate America to do what is right in the workplace by upholding our laws and regulations and treating workers with dignity and respect. Corporate America is beholden to the almighty dollar and its shareholders. Unions are vital to protect and level the playing field for workers.

No one can answer this question without engaging in hyperbole.

But let’s look at what an America run by unions will look like:

Government unions – whose very existence was opposed by Franklin Roosevelt – would control the budgets of local, state and national governments (like they are trying to do through Prop 2 in Michigan), forcing massive tax hikes upon workers who will be silenced without a voice.

Private sector unions will continue their abuse of workers, redistributing their hard earned earnings into their own personal agendas, pockets and petty projects.

The resulting debt burden, adding trillions to the accumulated debt we are passing onto our children, will crush opportunity and literally murder the middle class.

Instead, let’s focus on strengthening opportunity for everyone.

Let’s focus on giving a stronger voice to everyone – not just union bosses – but every worker, creator and entrepreneur.

Let’s focus on cooperation and competition in a healthy value added way that provides incentives for everyone to get ahead and rejects the old ideas of redistribution.

Let’s believe in America and move America forward.
