The "silver bullet" is improving our region's business climate. This is why I've written bipartisan legislation known as the “Detroit Jobs Trust Fund” to take all federal tax funds collected from Detroit residents and businesses for a period of five years and reinvest them in education, local tax reduction, and essential services. This is also why I've championed initiatives to reduce illiteracy and combat crime. We need to enhance public safety to improve the image of our region and win back quality employers. At the national level, the key to economic recovery is restoring consumer confidence. While wages are stagnant, Americans are overwhelmed with mortgages, student loans, and medical bills. As a result, few are purchasing homes or starting businesses. My most important action as a Member of Congress has been to launching a national movement to bring relief to people struggling under the inescapable burden of household debt. Our bill, the Student Loan Forgiveness Act of 2012, inspired a national petition that has received signatures from more than one million American citizens. This has changed the economic debate in Washington.

What is your plan and “Silver Bullet” to turn around the economy, and name the most important action you have taken (as a citizen, in business or in politics) to turn our economy around in Metro Detroit? My family and I have contributed to our Metro Detroit economy. I have paid taxes and paid my bills. I did not take out a second mortgage on our family house (which I easily could have done) to buy unneeded purchases or to speculate on Wall Street. There is no silver bullet or simple plan to turn around the economy, beyond gradually ending the mortgage crisis which was the cause of the great recession of 2008. We are in the midst of this recovery. It is a slow process to recover from the severe bank panic and housing crisis of 2008. Any candidate who says he/she knows the answer, does not understand the situation. It is a big mistake to follow any Pied Piper who thinks she/he knows the simple answer since this person will lead us over the edge.

There are no “silver bullets” to turn around the economy, but I believe President Obama’s initiatives to stimulate the economy and his American Jobs Act are right on track. As Mayor of Southfield, I have consistently worked to attract and maintain job-providing businesses in our city while presenting balanced budgets. As Mayor, I have also worked to make sure our city provided efficient and dependable city services to enhance the quality of life for our residents.

While there is no “Silver Bullet” fix for our economy, as a Member of Congress I have consistently focused my efforts on fighting for legislation that will help small businesses and entrepreneurs. Small businesses, particularly newly created businesses, are responsible for two thirds of all new jobs in this country and I have worked tirelessly to help them get access to the resources they need to grow and expand. I worked with industry, state economic development officials, and a bipartisan group of my colleagues in Congress to author and pass the State Small Business Credit Initiative. Michigan will receive $79 million under this program, and according to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, $30 million of that funding has already been used to leverage an additional $85 million in private investments into 137 projects around the state that have created over 3,300 jobs. I will continue to fight for common sense policies that help create an economic environment that will make it easier for Michigan businesses to grow, make new investments, and create much needed jobs.

There is no silver bullet that will penetrate the tougher than Kevlar fiscal vest that strangles our nation. This election will send to Congress members that must make decisions that will either drive our nation past a recession into what could turn into a depression if the wrong turns are made. Looming Tax Hikes coupled with mandated government spending cuts will take over $600 billion out of our economy in 2013. We must do more than take stop gap measures that delay the tough decision until the next election cycle. That is an irresponsible tactic doomed to failure sooner than later. To right the economy government must bite the bullets of denial and intervene with a substantial stimulus emanating from the grassroots bottom up not from the top down. There can be no tax hike on those making less than $350,000 annually. We must rejuvenate consumer spending by extending tax cuts to individuals and small-mid size businesses. Simultaneously we must end the War Spending and channel those dollars so they can be the foundation for the "People's Stimulus that will help people keep foreclosed houses and extend jobless benefits. I will fight to protect American jobs by ensuring that countries we do business with are not taking advantage of our economy and pay their fair share for goods they sell here. The feds must inject hundreds of billions of dollars into America from the ground up for housing, infra structure, education, making college affordable for all with subsidies to families and colleges, job training, targeting single mothers and American cities. This will be a form of quantitative easing for the people. As a state legislator I worked with owners of small-midsized businesses making state resources and expertise available so that they could survive during tough economic times. My intervention even helped a local community college dodge fiscal bullets that threatened the very existence of an institution that educated and trained many of metro Detroit's entrepreneurs. I will bring the same productive skills to Congress.
